There's nothing worse than completing a direct composite anterior restoration or indirect porcelain veneer case only to find a slight, or significant, shade mismatch once the operatory light is turned off and the patient checks your work in natural daylight. The problem becomes very clear, very quickly. For years dentists have been dealing with this clinical problem by changing their office and operatory lighting to mimic natural light or by sending their patients to the lab for custom shade-taking. Even with these extra precautions, mismatched shades are still an all-too-common reality for many dentists.
Natural daylight is a difficult thing to mimic due to variances in cloud cover, time of day, and whether you are judging it while standing outside or inside or looking through a window. The accepted measurement of natural daylight is a wavelength of 5500 Kelvin. Therefore, in order to take and create colours using composite or porcelain that will match natural tooth structure, it is essential that the lighting we use also matches natural daylight.
Introducing the Optilume TRUESHADE a portable, handheld illumination device that provides instant, correct, and constant daylight (5500K) at the correct proximity to the working site. The Optilume TRUESHADE features the latest LED technology, providing 10 LEDs affixed at 45 degrees to provide natural light without specular reflections (fig 1). In addition, TRUESHADE gives you 2x magnification with the highest optical quality thanks to its BK7 crown glass lens. Now TRUESHADE allows you to perfectly match the desired shade and with extreme accuracy! Simply hold the TRUESHADE 2-3 inches from your patient's mouth, depress the button for illumination and hold your shade tabs against the appropriate teeth to select the proper shade.
TRUESHADE is also an excellent diagnostic tool, in addition to its primary, shade-matching role, as it allows you to illuminate and magnify the entire oral cavity.
