Course Summary:
Dr. Margeas will lead the participants through the principles of preparation, impressioning, temporization, and cementation to create predictable esthetic results with porcelain veneers.
PART 1 – Veneer Preparation – LECTURE
- Learn a conservative preparation design to ensure restorative longevity, while preventing post-operative sensitivity
- Review ideal marginal design principles: When to break contacts and when not to; incisal edges, when to wrap and when not to; supergingival, subgingival, and equagingival
- Discuss when to choose pressed porcelain versus feldspathic porcelain and minimum preparation depths for each porcelain
- Learn step–by–step, a conservative approach to tooth reduction while preserving enamel
PART 1 – Veneer Preparation – HANDS–ON
Each participant will conservatively prepare six porcelain veneers on a typodont with step-by-step instruction from Dr. Margeas and associate DDS staff.
PART II – Veneer Provisionalization & Impressioning – LECTURE
- Learn the importance of accurate provisional veneers and why they are the blueprint for patient acceptance and success of the final restoration
- Learn how to easily create accurate provisionals that will help maintain tissue health
- Learn how to achieve contamination-free hemostasis in a variety of conditions
- Discuss various impression systems and how to choose one that will provide consistently accurate impressions with both simple and difficult cases
- Discuss and review impression tray selection and what tray materials work best for veneer impressions
PART II – Veneer Provisionalization & Impressioning – HANDS–ON
PROVISIONALIZATION – Each participant will create provisionals for six porcelain veneers on their prepared typodont models utilizing a simple, innovative chairside technique with minimal flash and chair time.
IMPRESSIONING – Each participant will take a full arch impression using a novel impression tray system that mimics a custom tray, in conjunction with a 3rd generation hydroactive poly vinyl siloxane impression material.
PART III – Veneer Cementation, Finishing & Polishing – LECTURE
- Discuss various adhesive systems and which ones are indicated for porcelain veneers
- Review step-by-step, the proper adhesive procedure to ensure long term retention
- Review the differences between VITA shade cements and custom shaded cements
- Learn the proper cementation technique for restorative longevity with minimal clean-up and finishing
- How to properly adjust and polish the final prosthesis to achieve a high gloss result
PART III – Veneer Cementation, Finishing & Polishing – HANDS–ON
CEMENTATION – Each participant will cement one porcelain veneer and learn the basics of try-in techniques, as well as use the ideal adhesive and cementation techniques for long term success.
FINISHING – Each participant will learn when and how to remove excess cement, how to properly cure each veneer and effectively finish and polish the veneer.

About the Speaker
Dr. Robert Margeas serves as Adjunct
Professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry
at the University of Iowa. He is a clinical instructor at the
Center for Excellence, Chicago, IL. Dr. Margeas is board
certified by the American Board of Operative Dentistry and
is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).
He maintains a private practice devoted to esthetic dentistry in Des Moines, IA.
